How Can the Empowerment of Employees with Intellectual Disabilities Be Supported?
Abstract:
The project “Barrier-Reduced Machines in Innovative Interaction” (iBaMs) aimed at enabling employees with intellectual disabilities to extend their range of tasks and at increasing their level of responsibility by specifying the user’s needs and design requirements for an assistive disabled-accessible control panel for the operation of complex computer-controlled machines. The one-year iBaMs project set out to boost the participation of people with special needs in working life. Its main objective was to explore the needs and skills of employees with intellectual disabilities in using digital technology and to define the necessary features of an assistive control panel. The result is a concept for an assistive control panel whose display interface can be tailor-made to individual needs, while at the same time including standardized processes in the background that provide health and safety protection and control of the workflow. Furthermore, indicators for characterizing user profiles and control panels were identified, and a concept was developed of how (sub)optimal control panels can be determined and matched to the needs and preferences of individual employees.
