Abstract:
Forcing of the stratosphere by vertically propagating planetary tropospheric waves is believed to be a necessary condition for a stratospheric warming. In January and February 1980, several pulses of high activity in wavenumber one and two took place in the upper troposphere and at the end of February the zonal flow broke down in the middle stratosphere and the whole mesosphere associated with a major warming. The response of the middle atmosphere to the trospheric forcing is shown by the mean flow and planetary waves computed from SAMS data (Stratospheric And Mesospheric Sounder on board the Nimbus 7 satellite) up to 80 km. ... These results are compared with a three-dimensional model simulation up to 80 km performed by forcing a primitive equation model with the real time-dependent amplitudes and phases of wave one and two at 300 mbar. The long-term mixing of Ertel's potential vorticity can also be seen in the model simulations and when a partial reflecting layer developed at subtropical latitudes in the model the polar vortex also broke down.
