Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) has a groundbreaking impact on biological and clinical research. A vast amount of sequencing data is generated every day. The broad field of NGS applications led to countless different methods and programs for data analysis. Various tasks are performed by multiple tools, which are often used in software pipelines. This article gives an overview of common procedures, explains their approaches, indicates possible obstacles and suggests available software tools.
