Smart School in a Smart City: An Experience with Information Security in Schools

Title:
Smart School in a Smart City: An Experience with Information Security in Schools
Authors:
Abstract:
Technical innovations are not the only defining feature of a Smart School. Teachers must also be trained and educated to communicate their knowledge about the technologies involved, the associated risks and vulnerabilities, and the measures taken. The SecAware4school research project is aimed at raising student awareness of information security in everyday school life to ensure that children and teenagers are conscious and careful in their handling of personal data when using Internet services and social media. They can be sensitized to these critical issues by means of awareness training, creative workshops, and specially developed game-based learning scenarios. These are derived from three learning methods: Game-Based, Accelerated, and Authentic Learning. A total of some 600 pupils from Years 6 to 11 are taking part in the research project at five pilot schools in Berlin and Brandenburg. To achieve a broad-ranging, sustainable impact even after the end of the project, up to 10% of the pupils will be trained as security consultants. In addition, some of the pilot schools will establish complete seminars and project days on information security, based on methods drawn from the research project in daily school life. This is one of the goals that has been successfully implemented in the project. In summary, gearing the measures to student experience has given information security issues a practical and accessible focus, facilitating understanding of this important topic.
