Synthesis, Characterisation and Application of SiO2-Methyl Cellulose Hybrid Materials
Abstract:
New silica hybrid materials containing tetraethylortosilicate as an inorganic precursor and water soluble cellulose ether- methyl cellulose as an organic compound are prepared by sol- gel process. The hybrid materials have been synthesized varying the quantity of organic substance in order to determine the most appropriate concentrations for cell adsorption experiments. The optimum amount of methyl cellulose in the gel was found to be 50 wt. %, which has been calculated from the total weight of the sol components. The results have shown that the obtained hybrids form new macromolecular structures, in which nanoscaled inorganic particles are dispersed in the cellulose host matrix bounding to the cellulose through weak forces. The synthesized hybrid materials have been applied as matrices for immobilization of the filamentous yeast Trichosporon cutaneum R57. This strain shows the considerable ability to remove cadmium and copper ions from aqueous solutions. The results of protein content analysis indicate the increase of protein amount with the increase of methyl cellulose content. It was found out that the maximal efficiency of copper and cadmium removal were observed at hybrid materials containing 50 wt.% methylcellulose.
